One of the most difficult decisions on your self-publishing journey is choosing your ebook publisher. The Internet is a veritable sea of self-publishing options and it can be so tricky to know which one is right for you.

I have been there. I have self-published two novels and did a great deal of research before I chose my ebook publisher. Here is a rundown of some of the best ebook publishers out there, which will hopefully help you decide which one best suits your needs.

Amazon KDP

Ideal for: Completed, polished ebooks

Most popular genres: Nonfiction, Suspense, Romance

Amazon KDP is one of the best-known ebook publishers out there, and with good reason. Its publishing process is easy, straightforward, and will only take a few minutes. All you need to do is sign in to your Amazon account on Amazon KDP and click “+ Create”. Then click “Create eBook. Then you enter your book’s info like your title, description, and keywords. After that, all you need to do is upload and preview your book and set rights and pricing. Amazon KDP has a handy guide that will take you through the steps.

Smashwords

Ideal for: Completed, polished ebooks

Most popular genres: Romance, Erotica, Nonfiction

Established in 2008, Smashwords is a popular platform for self-published writers, particularly romance writers. To publish an ebook, just click “Publish” on the top navigation bar. Then you enter book info like your title and a short description as well as a long description. You will also be prompted to choose your novel’s primary category and tags. Booksie

Ideal for: Short stories and in progress or completed novels

Most popular genres: Action and Adventure, Children’s Stories, Commercial Fiction

Booksie is a free social publishing site where people can post novels, short stories, essays, and more for free. To post on the site, click “Post Your Writing” at the top of the main page, then click “Add New Content”. Input your story info like title, tags, and summary blurb. Next, you upload your cover image. The site will provide you with a default image if you don’t have one. Then you can input your first chapter. Royal Road

Ideal for: Unfinished books to be posted chapter by chapter 

Most popular genres: LitRPG, Fantasy, Science Fiction

Royal Road is a popular ebook publisher that is great for posting stories chapter by chapter. You can also link your Patreon to your stories and make some money from subscriptions. To post a story, just click “Write” on the top navigation bar. Then click “Add New” on your author dashboard. Then it’s as simple as uploading your cover image, inputting your title and synopsis, and choosing your genres and tags. Then all you need to do is write your first chapter, or copy and paste it from a program like Microsoft Word. Royal Road’s Knowledge Base is full of helpful articles about the site that will answer any questions you might have.

Neovel

Ideal for: Unfinished books to be posted chapter by chapter

Most popular genres: Romance, Fantasy, Action

Neovel is a fiction platform with 31k monthly users and 1.7k active users. You can make money based on how many views your story gets. To post a novel, click “Write” at the top of the main page. After that, click “Start writing”, then “Add your book” Enter book info like your book’s title, genres, descriptions, and tags. Then select “+ Add chapter” and you can input your first chapter. Wattpad

Established in 2006, Wattpad is one of the most popular ebook publishers out there. Several authors have landed traditional publishing and film deals from posting their work on the site, so if you’re interested in traditionally publishing your work later down the line, Wattpad could be a good fit. To post your story, click “Write” at the top and select “Create a new story” from the dropdown menu. Enter book info like the book’s title, description, tags, and target audience. Then you can go straight into inputting your first chapter. You have the option to include an image or YouTube link with your chapter. Fictionate.Me
